As part of our community outreach, the Topeka (KS) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and Washburn University Theatre are co-sponsoring a special March 2nd YOUTH NIGHT during our Black History Month production of BROTHERS OF THE DUST (BOTD) at no charge to participants. At no cost, we welcome youth 8th - 12th grade to come early to the March 2nd production of Brothers of the Dust. Students will have the opportunity to tour Washburn University Theatre, have dinner and watch the performance. After the show there will be a talk back panel for the entire audience that will include playwright Darren Canady, as well as members of the cast.
For 8th - 12th grade students, the free Brothers of the Dust Youth Night, 5pm - 10pm, provides:
An opportunity to explore Washburn theatre program, admissions and college life
Time to meet Washburn Theatre faculty members
An up-close tour of the Brothers of the Dust set
An opportunity to meet and talk with nationally acclaimed Topeka playwright Darren Canady
Time to meet Dr. Sharon Sullivan, the Director of Brothers of the Dust
An opportunity to speak with cast members
A visit and discussion of the Great Migration exhibit in the Neese-Gray Theatre Lobby
An opportunity to have dinner, ask questions and talk with college students in a small group setting in the Washburn University Cafeteria
The rare opportunity to see a drama with an all-Black cast, written by a celebrated Black playwright and college professor during the 7:30pm performance
A Talk Back sessions after the performance to discuss themes with the playwright, cast and others
A chance to interact with members of the historic 65 year old Topeka (KS) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. Established in 1946, The Links, Incorporated is one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the cultural and economic survival of African Americans and other people of African ancestry.
